課程概述

This course is designed to advance students’ understanding and experience of group work practice. Students will engage in experiential excises (e.g. small group discussion and project) to solidify their understanding.

 

課程目標
1. To familiarize the essence of group work practice
2. To comprehend group dynamics and group leadership
3. To participate in the six stages of group work
4. To understand specialized methods of group work
5. To gain personal insights of group experiences
 
課程要求
1. Punctuality, attendance, and active participation are expected.
2. Experiential group: Students participate in the in-class experiential group for two times (A & B).
3. Reading, acting and reflecting: Students will read the novel
a. The Schopenhauer Cure b in four weeks (chap. 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-42).
b. Each small group will act a segment of the group interactions (20 mins.) from the novel to reflecting the themes of group dynamics (chap. 3a), leadership (chap. 4 a), and the therapeutic factors (Reference c, d & e).
c. After the acting, each small group needs to present the link between your reading, acting and reflecting. The acting is due on March 17, 24, 31.
4. Session report: With chosen evaluation forms (on CEIBA), the report is to describe/analyze your experiences in the small group project. The focuses of the report are
a. your experience as a leader/member/observer
b. comparison of your in-group and out-group patterns (thinking, emotion, & behavior)
c. new skills that you practice in the group
d. your gains and insights.
This report (2-3 pages, single space) is due on May 19.
5. Debriefing group discussion (D): Actively participate in the discussion after viewing the debriefing training DVDs by raising questions, implication considerations, sharing insights, etc.
6. Small group project:
a. Target-group interview (T): Each small group interviews its target-group to soliciting members’ intent of group topic to enhance the planning process.
b. Group proposal: Design and develop a 5-session group (3:30-4:30pm, 60 minutes each). Please refer to appendix D and E as the format of the proposal. The group proposal (5-10 pages, single space) is due on April 14. Starting from April, 21, students take turn to lead a target-group and participate/observe in their home group to experience the six-stage group process.
c. Leaders’/Members’ group: After each group, leaders/members attend the post-session group (4:40-5:20pm, 40 minutes each) lead by the teaching assistant/instructor to reflect up their leadership/group experience.
d. Oral presentation: The small group presentation includes 30 minutes presentation and 20 minutes discussion. Focuses of the presentation are overall goal/procedures of the group (5’), group dynamics (20’), and insights/suggestions (5’). While preparing and present, your group is the leader for the whole class. So, be prepared and enjoy!! After the scheduled presentations, the whole class will process the day’s experience for 30 mins.
